
Picking the Right Infrared Heater for Your Bathroom
Let’s be honest: there is nothing worse than stepping out of a hot shower into a bathroom that feels like a walk-in freezer. When you’re picking out infrared heaters to fix this, you aren’t just fighting a chill. You’re dealing with steam, humidity, and the actual size of the room. If you don’t match the wattage to the space, you’re basically just throwing money at the wall.
Don’t underpower your space
I see this all the time. Someone puts a low-wattage lamp in a huge master bath, and it’s a disaster. The floor stays freezing, and the heater just runs forever without actually making a difference. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W lamp usually does the trick. But if you’ve got a medium or large bathroom (6m² to 12m²), you really need to jump up to 800W or 1200W. Here is the thing about shortwave infrared: it doesn’t actually heat the air. It heats you and the things you’re touching. If the wattage is too low for the distance between the lamp and your skin, that heat just vanishes before it ever reaches you.
Steam and stress
You absolutely need waterproof housings here. No shortcuts. You need those seals to keep steam and splashes away from the electrical guts of the machine. But there’s a catch. Tighter seals can sometimes trap heat around the base of the lamp. That’s why I always suggest quartz glass tubes. They handle “thermal shock” way better, meaning the glass won’t crack when it hits that cold, damp bathroom air.
The wiring reality check
More power means you get warm faster. That sounds great, right? But keep an eye on your wiring. If you plug three 1200W lamps into one small circuit, you’re probably going to trip a breaker or, worse, overheat your wires. Before you go big on wattage, double-check what your electrical panel can actually handle. It’s a balancing act. You want a cozy room, but you don’t want to overload your house. Pick the wattage based on the room’s size, not just because the fixture says it can handle it.
