
Getting Your Glass Bead Annealing Right
If you’ve ever dealt with internal stress or random cracking in your glass beads, you know the frustration. It usually comes down to the ramp-down. Here’s the thing: we don’t just sell you a heater and wish you luck. We look at the whole thermal environment. A lot of off-the-shelf heating elements fail because they ignore the basics—like how much glass you’re actually moving or how fast your conveyor is humming along. Power and Voltage: The Real-World Stuff When you need to move a lot of product quickly, we usually go with high-wattage quartz lamps. Now, whether we run those at 230V or 400V really just depends on what your plant can actually handle. High voltage is great because it lets us cram more wattage into a shorter tube. It’s a lifesaver when you’re tight on oven space but still need to hit those peak temperatures fast. Just make sure your controllers can take the load, or you’ll spend your afternoon resetting tripped breakers. Why Quartz Matters We use short-wave infrared (SWIR) emitters for beads. Why? Because short-wave radiation actually gets inside the glass. Other options often just cook the surface while the core stays cold—which is a recipe for disaster. To keep things durable, we use heavy-wall quartz so the lamps don’t give up on you during high-pressure cycles. If your shop is particularly dusty, we can add a protective coating. It dips the infrared output a tiny bit, but it keeps the lamps from dying prematurely. The Trade-offs High-density heaters are fast. Really fast. But that speed comes with a catch: a sharper thermal gradient. If your cooling zone isn’t perfectly in sync with the heater, you’re going to get thermal shock. It’s a mess. That’s why we come on-site to map out your actual temperature curve. We look at your belt speed and the diameter of your beads to see if you just need a quick replacement or if the whole heater array needs a rethink. Getting the spacing right is the only way to ensure you get a uniform bead instead of a bin full of scrap.
