
Trying to cut ultra-thick glass is basically a fight. If you’re doing it cold, you’re just beating up your equipment. The cutting wheel takes a pounding, the edges come out jagged, and your tools wear out way too fast because the glass is just too stubborn to take a clean score. We found a better way: high-penetration infrared (IR) heating lamps. Here is the trick. Standard heat is too slow; it just sits on the surface. But shortwave IR lamps work differently. They dive deep into the glass, creating a little “warm zone” exactly where the wheel is about to hit. It doesn’t melt the glass, but it softens it just enough to take the edge off that internal stress. Suddenly, the glass stops fighting you. This is a huge win for your tools. When the path is pre-heated, your tungsten carbide or diamond wheels aren’t slamming into a brick wall. There’s less friction, less impact, and you aren’t swapping out worn-out wheels nearly as often. It turns a violent snap into a smooth, controlled split. But you can’t just crank the power to max and walk away. If you get too greedy with the heat, you’ll end up with thermal shock or cracks that wander all over the place. You have to find the sweet spot between how hot the lamp is and how fast the cutting head is moving. If you slow the machine down, you’ve got to dial back the heat. And a word of advice: don’t forget the shielding. If you don’t block that radiant heat, you’ll warp your aluminum rails or fry your sensors. Not a great look.
