You have to get those internal stresses out, or the whole thing is a ticking time bomb. Most shops just throw everything into a traditional kiln and wait. But waiting is a waste of time. That’s why we shifted to fast-response infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of stopping the line to bake everything in a giant oven, we move the annealing process inline. You keep moving. The glass keeps moving. Everything just flows.
Why “Fast” Actually Matters
Here’s the thing about standard heating elements: they’re heavy. They have too much thermal mass, which means they lag. You turn them up, and you’re still waiting for the heat to catch up. Shortwave IR lamps are different. They hit target temperatures in seconds. It’s a huge relief on the shop floor. If your conveyor speeds up, you just crank the power. If things slow down, you drop it instantly. You aren’t fighting with a massive oven that takes an hour to adjust. You just dial it in and keep going.
Getting the Heat Where It Counts
To get borosilicate to behave, you need a lot of power packed into a small space. We focus on high power density. By pushing a ton of wattage into a tight footprint, the heat actually penetrates deep into the glass walls. This means the core and the surface cool down at the same rate. No uneven cooling. No sudden cracks. No heartbreak when you finally pick up the piece.
The Gritty Reality of the Shop Floor
Now, let’s be real: this isn’t some “plug and play” magic box. These lamps pull a lot of juice and they gethot. I mean really hot. If you don’t get your cooling fans and ventilation right, you’re going to warp your housings or fry your electronics. Don’t skip the airflow specs. Placement is also a bit of an art. If the lamp is too close, you’ll get “hot spots” that ruin the glass. Too far, and you’re wasting energy because the radiation isn’t hitting the mark. We usually stick with calibrated mounting brackets. It keeps the focal point steady, so the first piece of the day gets the exact same treatment as the last one.
