You know that feeling when you step into a bathroom and flip on an infrared heater, but it feels like a spotlight is hitting you right in the eyes? It’s annoying. And if you’ve got a baby or someone with sensitive eyes in the house, that harsh glare is more than just a nuisance—it’s actually pretty stressful on the retinas. Most of these heaters use short-wave radiation to get you warm fast. The problem is that the “warmth” comes packaged with a lot of intense, visible light. We decided to fix that by tweaking how the quartz heating element actually works. Keeping the heat, losing the glare Here’s the thing: we didn’t just dim the lights. That would just make the heater weaker. Instead, we used special coatings on the quartz glass and some clever filtering to block out those harsh, blinding peaks of light. It basically shifts the energy. You still get all that cozy, deep heat that warms your skin, but the “blinding” part is gone. It’s a much softer experience. Dealing with the steam Bathrooms are tough on electronics. Between the steam and the splashes, most seals eventually give up. To stop that from happening, we used high-temperature silicone gaskets and housings that are built to keep moisture far away from the electrical bits. Since we’re packing a lot of heat into a small space, we also used heat-resistant polymers. That way, the plastic doesn’t warp or get weird after a few months of heavy use. The one trade-off Now, there is a small catch. Because we’re filtering out those specific light waves to protect your eyes, the lamp takes a few seconds longer to hit its top temperature than those “blinding” heaters do. It’s a tiny delay. A few seconds of waiting for a much safer, more comfortable light. To us, that’s a fair trade. One quick tip if you’re installing these in a commercial building: just make sure your breakers can handle the initial surge when the heaters first kick in. Better safe than sorry.
